Cutty Sark – Original Easy-Drinking Whisky – Blended Scotch
Manufactured at Glasgow, Cutty Sark is an exotic series of blended whisky. It was made on the 23rd of March, 1923 at the Glenrothes distillery, located at Speyside in Scotland. The drink was named after clipper ship built by River Clyde. From 1955, the label also had a drawing of the “Cutty Sark” by the mariner painter, Carl Georg August Wallin from Sweden. It is known for it’s characteristic easy-drinking nature and is more famous to build cocktails.
HISTORY OF CUTTY SARK
In 1923, on a fine summer afternoon, the trend of exquisite Scotch Whisky had a revolutionary turning point. The three masters of the industry, Hugh Rudd, Francis Berry and James McBey sat together for a lunch at the James’s Street parlor at London. The former two were partners for the existing popular and distinguished spirit and wine dealers known as the Berry Bros. Invariably their discussion was circled around the exotic whiskies all around the world. The Berry Bros had already been well known for their unique brand of Scotch for about sometime around all over UK. Within the produced quantity, some were already exported to their list of executive customers in the United States, just before the Second World War started. Similar to the existing famous merchants, the Berry Bros were also aware of the fact that the heavier and darker whiskies have the capacity of spoiling the palate of the devoted wine clients. While the prohibition era had gulped the majority of the United States, the partners took the advantage of this time to create a unique variety of blended Scotch whisky. This was specifically for the international market.
This elegant whisky was planned to be distinctive than the existing whiskies in the market, by being lighter in texture and being a balanced mixture from the exotic Scotch whiskies all over. Thus the end product was decided to be finished and bottled without the addition of any artificial color. This light flavored whisky was expected to be more suiting to the taste buds of the wine drinkers. The Berry Bros. & Rudd, already had an advantage in the market, since their lighter version was distinctively different from the other heavy and deep drinks already being sold in the market. All what was required was a catchy name, thus Cutty Sark seemed to be more than apt, since it was very much in news at that time. Being a sailor himself, the name was suggested by James McBey. He also took the initiative of designing the label of the bottle, and used “Scot” instead of the commonly used “Scotch Whisky”.
Cutty Sark Series
Below are a few well-known editions of Cutty Sark series:
Cutty Sark Blend
The maturation in old oak American kegs, not only enhances the original color of the drink, but also enhances the complex subtle flavors. After cautiously selecting the ace single malt scotch whiskeys, they are blended with the best of the grain whisky, expertly forming the very unique Cutty Sark with a very consistent flavor and hue.
The pale gold colored drink has a fresh and grassy smell and has a combined taste of vanilla with the oakiness from the kegs. Bottling is finished with a dry and fruity texture.
CUTTY SARK STORM
Made after using the same quality of ace marked grain whisky as for Cutty Sark Blend, the Storm collection however has a higher percentage of the much older single malt whiskies that result in a blend of complexity. With an amber colored appearance it has an exotic fruity flavor along with rich fudge triggering the texture that can only originate from the age old malts. The drier version of the drink is finished with the sweetness of fruity peach and a fascinating velvety texture.
CUTTY SARK 12 YEARS OLD
The traditional sweetness of the Cutty Sark and a round finish is a symbol of the blending art. This is a special attraction for those who love enjoying the textures of a Scotch whisky along with elegance and depth of a long finish, symbolizing the Cutty Sark house style.
With a bright light gold color, and a subtle fruity fragrance, this drink has an elegant taste with a touch of a soft sweet.
CUTTY SARK 18 Years old
This 18 year old exotic whisky is a soft taste and is a symbol of being inspired by customers, who has always been happy and expects more out of everything. This exquisite drink is phenomenal for its classic smooth and lingering taste in the mouth. The amber colored texture that is derived from the barrels, lined with sherry has a soft peaty aroma. The bottle has a bright, rich and polished balanced taste with traces of oak.
CUTTY SARK Prohibition
Made as a tribute to the popular Captain Willima “Bill” McCoy, CUTTY SARK Prohibition is known as well-loved based for cocktails. McCoy smuggled this into the America in the Prohibition era of 1920s. He was known to not entertain the crowd but offer the best, unadulterated whisky, that gave this CUTTY SARK the name as “The Real McCoy”.
Tam o’ Shanter
This drink with an ABV of 46.5%, a latest form of the already existing 25 year old legendary blended Cutty Sark, with additional hints of darkness and wildness. With a narrowed down production of only 5000, the bottles are designed specifically to resemble the uniqueness of the taste with Robert Burns Tam o’Shanter curved all around the bottle surface with an added wax closure depicting the face of Tam.
With a rich and shadowed dark amber color, the drink has a sparkling appearance as that of the Gith fire. With a mixed aroma of spiced jasmine, sandalwood and anise, the drink leaves a hint of dark chocolaty sweetness in the mouth along with hints of eucalyptus, dry mint and broken black pepper. The subtleness of sherry is at the background to enhance the flavors and give the drink a long lasting creamy and spiced finish. This is an ideal example of a whisky that has a unique full body.
Cutty Sark makers say that it can be enjoyed with Soda, Ginger Ale, Cola, Lemon, Orange.
